Legendary queen of the caravan cities, Petra, legendary on the edge of the Arabian Desert, was the glittering capital of the Nabataean king Aretas IV (9 BC to 40 AD). Masters of water technology, the Nabataeans have endowed their city with large tunnels and water chambers. An amphitheater, built according to Greco-Roman prototypes, could accommodate no less than 4,000 people.
